The next installment in Paige Shelton's Alaska Wild series, a gripping, atmospheric, traditional mystery series with a great wilderness hook.
Beth Rivers needs to disappear. Her one-time kidnapper, Travis, is on his way to her town in Alaska, and she's losing time to get out quickly.
The perfect spot for Beth and her boyfriend, Tex, to hide, presents itself in a camp in the woods, away from Benedict. But when their trip takes them by Blue Mine, a small community that has seen tragedy over the last couple months, plans get diverted. Beth and Tex bring the widow of a recently murdered man back to Benedict, for Police Chief Gril to investigate, only to find that nothing is quite what it seems. When the woman vanishes, Beth must be on the alert for further danger. Who knows what further unwelcome disappearances--or appearances--might be lurking in the unforgiving Alaska storms.

Memphis Afternoons by James Conaway |

James Conaway knew there was something wrong with his father before he let himself think too deeply about it.The signs were there, in unfocused phone calls and cryptic letters. Then on a reporting trip to his hometown Conaway had to face facts: his father was in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, a dreaded illness that inspired this beautifully written memoir of family and the South. As memory left his father, the author was moved to recreate the world they had shared, memory being the bulwark against oblivion. Many of these fragments are outrageously funny. The book takes us back to a society where the rules of southern gentlemanliness were still in effect, if barely. Propriety had always fought a dubious battle with bourbon, and now was being defeated by the likes of Elvis Presley and Jack Kerouc. With rueful wit Conaway artfully renders a youth of hunting and fishing giving way to brawling, debutante parties, and literary exploration. The story’s told against a wistful background of an older generation with belated appreciation for its hopes, ideals and diminished postwar reality. Conaway writes of the idiosyncrasies of family life with a keen yet tender sense of the absurd, particularly the sometimes loving, mysterious relationship with his father. Linking the generations is an antiquated but powerful code of conduct, recalled here with extraordinary vividness and humor. Jim Lehrer in The Washington Post - “Profound... hilarious... honest and serious... proof that the gods look more favorably on some writers than they do on others... conaway moves through his family and life in Memphis in the ‘40s and ‘50s with the flow and grace of an impressionist painter.” Tracy Kidder (Mountains Beyond Mountains, House) - “Exemplary... absorbing... sad and funny... It awakens our own memories, makes our own lives more available to us.” Rick Bass (The Ninemile Wolves) “I’m crazy about this book, and implore the nation to read it... about the shuddering magnificence, the depthlessness, of the human heart.”

Their battle for survival becomes a battle for her heart….
In the harsh landscape of a world reborn from the ashes of a djinn-created apocalypse, Rowan Aames has carved out a life of solitary resilience in a remote valley in the northern New Mexico wilderness, where the arrival of Jamal al-Qadir challenges everything she knows. Disguised as James Aguilar, Jamal brings with him the promise of a new beginning…and the peril of a deep secret.
Their connection is immediate, a fragile thread woven from shared solitude and cautious trust. As Rowan welcomes James into her makeshift haven, they navigate the complexities of a world where survival is a day-to-day gamble, and companionship is a rare treasure. James’s small acts of magic, meant to ease Rowan’s burden, become the catalyst for a change neither of them can ignore.
Yet beneath the surface of their growing bond lies the tension of James’s true identity and the inevitable revelation that could shatter their fragile trust. When Jamal steps in to save Rowan’s life, a sudden, rash decision propels them into the crosshairs of djinn politics and human pride, where their journey becomes a delicate dance of love and deception, with the future of their relationship hinging on the courage to face the truth…and the strength to forge a new path together.

The Story of the Buddha by John Tarrant |

For readers of mythology, an original and introspective journey through the life of the Buddha accompanied by 26 beautiful color illustrations and 8 meditations.
From longtime Zen teacher and poet John Tarrant, this is an original retelling of the foundational myth of Buddhism—the life of the Buddha. Told and retold for centuries, this story holds a special place in the human legacy because it is, ultimately, an investigation of the nature of mind and consciousness. Literary-minded readers and fans of myths and folklore will be especially drawn to the Buddha’s encounters with kings, gods, heroes, monsters, and wise teachers in his spiritual quest.
In this captivating narrative, the author leans into his memories of the Egyptian and Greek myths he encountered as a child. “If we pour ourselves into the story of the Buddha,” he writes, “we enter the journey from an unusual place as far as myths go; we begin where the Odyssey ends.” The Buddha already had everything—a palace, family, food, wealth—yet he was suffocating with discontent. He needed to embark on a journey involving pain, searching, magic, and personal discovery. This led to his awakening and the teachings that form the basis of Buddhism.
John Tarrant frames the story with an intimate, inquisitive introduction and postscript that reflect his decades of studying koans and will resonate with a broad readership. The story of the Buddha is personal—it becomes your own story, opening an unexpected path to awakening. If you listen to the images that arise in its telling, you can find where you are in life and where you are headed.
The Buddha’s story becomes more personal with the concluding section of reflections and eight meditations about his life drawn from the Zen tradition. The book’s gorgeous full-color historical illustrations of characters and events in the Buddha’s life enrich the narrative journey. This lovely little book is a meaningful gift or addition to your own bedside or coffee table.
